The Old Covenant sought our obedience in pursuit of our salvation and our acts were unable to produce any form of righteousness or salvation. His coming meant that the Old Covenant was coming to a close. He alone would be worthy to bear the burden of our punishment and He alone would be able to save mankind. The solution came in the person of Jesus Christ. With no amount of sin being acceptable and no sacrifice being perfect, no solution to the issue of sin and imperfection could be found. However, humanity was still unable to meet the requirements of either. Thus, the law provided the roadmap for righteousness and the perfect sacrifices provided the path to forgiveness. Sin’s cost required that blood be spilt, a cost the people could not pay themselves and survive. The temple provided the people with the opportunity to sacrifice animals for the sins of the people. The Old Covenant primarily hinged on adherence to the law of God and to meet the standards of holiness and righteousness to approach God. Even for you and me today, through our faith in Jesus Christ, we step into our new life and put to death the old life. Thus, the relationship between God and His people would not only stretch and expand but also would not fit within the confines of the Old Covenant. The Old Covenant was not bad, but people were unable to fully meet its requirements, let alone the additional requirements of the Pharisees. Throughout the courses of Jesus’ life, He simultaneously fulfilled the requirements of the Old Covenant while instituting the New Covenant. When new wine would be added, the wineskin would tear, unable to hold the contents. After their use, the old wineskins would be brittle and unable to stretch anymore. ![]() As wine fermented, the wineskin would stretch and expand according to the wine. This is an example of how the old and the new systems were incompatible. The clothes must either both be new or both be shrunk. Since the old cloth had already shrunk, putting new cloth on the old cloth would shrink according to its use and wear, and tear the cloth even more. Thus, Jesus explained the coming New Covenant that he would establish through two metaphors the people would have understood: clothing and wine.Ĭlothes oftentimes would tear and requiring patching. This was no time for fasting, but for celebration. The Savior had come to be with them and live with His people. The disciples were not required to fast because their teacher, their rabbi, was the ultimate authority. Jesus, though, being the Word of God and understanding it fully, had no need or desire to obey man’s religious customs. The Pharisees added this feast, sometimes up to twice a week of full fasting. The law only required that the people fast on the day of Atonement, which this day was not. Thus, on this particular day, the Pharisees had set this day apart for fasting. The God who had once tabernacled with the people was now a far-off sight that the people were unable to approach. More and more, as the religious leaders of the day, they tightened the noose of sin and unrighteousness around the necks of the Israelites by making holiness even further off and God less and less approachable. Rules were tightened or added so as not to even come close to rebelling against God. The problem arose when they began to teach and require things beyond the scripture. They memorized the Torah, knew it forwards and backwards, and studied to understand their glorious God greater and greater. The Pharisees had, at first, sought to be the primary teachers and instructors of the truth of God. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” ( Mark 2:21-22, NIV) This conversation came on the heels of Jesus being questioned by the Pharisees as to why the disciples were not fasting. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse. “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. The firefighters and EMS workers who tested for carbon monoxide at the outset were key to identifying the cause of the incident and ensuring patients got the immediate treatment they needed. ![]() “It just amplifies the unsettling nature of the mass casualties on top of what it would normally be.”ĭr. Chase Jones, another emergency room toxicologist for LVHN, said everyone kept their cool and the coordination of the response was impressive from the get-go. “When you’re dealing with not only a lot of patients, but you are also dealing with a lot of kids, or kids that are months old, toddler age, etc., it just adds even more angst,” he said. Katz said a “mass casualty” situation like this can be particularly unsettling to the professionals responding for a number of reasons. Know the common sources and symptoms, immediate treatment options, and how to prevent CO poisoning FIRST RESPONDERS Katz said patients should have high levels of oxygen directly administered, which cuts the half-life of carbon monoxide in the body to an average of 90 minutes, compared with about five hours otherwise. Once the poisoned person is removed, their condition usually begins to slowly improve. ![]() When someone is being poisoned by carbon monoxide it is important to waste no time removing them from the exposure area. Testing for carbon monoxide showed the gas was present in a concentration of 700 parts per million, more than three times the threshold that can kill. Katz said the sheer number of children affected probably played a key role in the timely response by adults at Happy Smiles. The seriousness of the situation became even more apparent when napping children didn’t wake up. One of the first reported signs something was wrong was when one boy got up from his seat and then collapsed mid-stride. Pets and small children are especially sensitive to carbon monoxide poisoning and the children who were at Happy Smiles ranged from several months to 10 years old. Katz said what makes the compound particularly dangerous is how good it is at binding to hemoglobin, the part of red blood cells that carries oxygen throughout the body. Carbon monoxide is about 250 times better at binding to hemoglobin than oxygen, thereby decreasing the amount of hemoglobin available to carry oxygen, asphyxiating the person exposed. Early symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, chest pain and loss of coordination and motor control that results in something similar to a drunken stupor, called ataxia. What you need to know about carbon monoxide poisoningĬarbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas and is undetectable without specialty equipment. Under an amended city ordinance, childcare facilities in Allentown have to install detectors by Oct. Jesenia Gautreaux, the owner of the day care, previously told The Morning Call she was working to reopen as soon as possible and planned to install carbon monoxide detectors, which the building lacks. Ortega said the day care’s operators need to file for a permit to repair the building’s boiler unit, and then city inspectors will have to approve the facility to reopen. The facility passed a safety inspection in July. Genesis Ortega, a spokesperson for Allentown, said because of the incident, Happy Smiles’ operating license was suspended by the city Tuesday. UGI spokesperson Michael Swope said the company did not know the root causes behind the malfunction or blockage. The mass poisoning incident was caused by a malfunctioning heating unit and a blocked ventilation system, an investigation by UGI Utilities found. Penn Medicine did not respond to inquiries about patients who were taken to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Pennsylvania for more intensive treatment. Q&A: Carbon frame repair, learning bike mechanics.Main article: History of archery Origins and ancient archery. If you want to send me a photo of your bike, I'm happy to take a look and I can probably give your more specific help with your bike. Let me know if this answers your question. If I guessed correctly and you are missing the front brake housing section, it's probably about 24 inches long. You want the housing to have enough length so it reaches and has a nice bend so that as the brake opens and closes the housing can move a little and not bind. To do this you just hold them up to the brake lever (on the handlebar) and the brake caliper (on the frame) and you make an educated guess as to how long they should be. But if not, then you have to figure out the length yourself. If you have the old housing sections you can copy their length. To install the new cables and housings, you cut the housings to size, which is something that the mechanic figures out when working on the bike. When you buy a brake cable set, you will probably get the inner cables (the metal parts) and the housing (plastic parts - lined with metal inside). ![]() That's the plastic part that the cable runs through. ![]() It sounds like you might have lost a piece of the casing. It's a British 3-speed bicycle so it should take modern brake cables that you can buy almost anywhere that sells bike parts. If you get a good one in original condition, it'll be a nice rider perfect for getting around town or just becoming an outlaw and escaping reality for awhile. Check yard sales, flea markets, Goodwill stores, eBay, your neighbor's garage/attic! Robin Hood bicycles and head badges from the 1960's aren't all that hard to find or expensive. And, I'm sure other boys, like we did, pretended their bikes were horses and they were Robin's band of merry men. What's interesting to me, is that one 1960's 3-speed was pretty much identical to the next - sturdy all-British-steel construction, Sturmey-Archer 3-speed gearing, stamped-steel sidepull brakes, 26 x 1/38-inch wheels and tires, fenders and a chainguard.īut by naming theirs after the famous bowman from Sherwood Forest, and affixing a wonderful head badge of Robin in his Lincoln green suit with Nottingham Castle in the background, and using Robin Hood-theme decals, Raleigh captured every boy's attention (surely lots of men's too), and made them think that riding a Robin Hood was a lot more fun than pedaling around on a no-name two-wheeler. You can also make out that the 1944 Robin Hood model was likely higher quality and built with different components than the later models imported to the USA that we rode. Click to enlarge it so you can see Robin in his boots and cap, and shouldering his bow and quiver). On the left is a 1944 Robin Hood bicycle ad from my collection. Ridley Scott's new hit movie, Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe makes me think of other Robin Hoods - The Adventures of Robin Hood TV series and the brilliant 1938 Michael Curtiz movie of the same name with Errol Flynn as Robin, that all we kids watched in the sixties.īut, even more interesting, it makes me think of the " English racer" 3-speed Robin Hood bicycles made by Raleigh, that some of us were lucky enough to ride at the time. |
